Test drove the pre-facelift model and I gotta say the interior felt cheap and doesn't feel like a $100k car in Australia. The performance is nice but it's feels so cheap inside, I'm buying the GV70 of this for the same price with same performance figures and comes with free valet servicing

Great video. Back in 1994 I bought a champagne 1984 that was very similar to this one - whale tail (which I never cared for), body-colored Fuchs wheels (which I did). It was my daily driver. Even then it was a bit of a step backward technologically, mostly bc of the lack of power steering. But every time I saw it parked in the driveway, or especially took it out for a spin, it brought me so much joy. I recently watched your video on the Tesla Model 3. I have a 2022 M3 LR. I know this comparison will sound sacrilegious but it also brings me joy. It’s an engineering marvel that I actually find fun to drive. Practical, blindingly quick, very precise steering, and like the 911, a little bit stiff. I do miss that Porsche, but I’m excited about the future of cars..

The Tesla UK website states the RWD model has a 318 (WLTP) range and the AWD has 390mi. So, as the video suggests it is correct, thank you and I hope you enjoy the video.

I think the 300 miles one is the dual motor version.

At -1 oC my Audi Q4 etron will do 180miles and not the 316 miles quoted. 265miles at that temp and on heating fully with 3 people is an absolute bargain.

Keep a nice "manual" non paddle shifter car, without auto blip for nostalgia and weekend fun, V8 if possible. With FSD working so well, I use it in traffic all the time, there is no reason to go through pain for a daily commute anymore. It's like DJs using digital players instead of turntables. You can get a lot of software automation with digital players, but occasionally its fun to beat match manually. My manual car used to smoke people off a red light being sub 6 seconds 0-60. That is slow as hell now compared to a model 3 performance at 2.9 seconds. Unless you want to be an obnoxious idiot with launch control revving at a red light, you ain't beating an EV, that isn't even trying to race at a red light. Track, that is different, keep your bmw m3s, but for majority of people who just go to work and back home, EV is the answer.

Great review. But the reason you are 80 miles short (239 miles) in your range check is because your guesstimate of 320 miles range is incorrect. The RWD gives you 272 miles and with your tester with bigger 19 inch wheels gives even less range which is 248 miles.

I thought this was an exceptionally well done piece, but I would like to challenge one assertion. This being that somehow the choice of fuel differentiates this car from IC cars. As a 69 year old gearhead who has owned lots of cars over his lifetime, and who currently owns a literbike, and a Tesla 3 I don't really care what fuel a vehicle uses, other than for environmental reasons. When I bought my Model 3 LRDM 5 years ago the choice was between a BMW M2 and the Tesla. The cars offered very similar performance, with the Tesla having the advantage of AWD, making it better for snowy conditions. Another consideration were both the cost of owning the car and the cost or running the car. Over many years I've concluded that BMWs are fine cars to own for the first 60k miles, but best to buy a new one at that mileage. An M2 gets an average of 18 MPG, so over the 60k miles I've owned my Tesla, which has cost me almost nothing to fuel since said fuel comes from my roof, the M2 would have cost me about $15,000 on fuel. Then there are the oil changes, the tires, the brake pads, etc. The Tesla has cost me almost nothing on maintenance over these 5 years/60k miles. Just one set of tires. Oh, and the car gets regular software updates that add cool features on a regular basis...for free. So, we have 2 cars that offer very similar performance, the Tesla having somewhat longer range than the M2, the Tesla having far better software/infotainment/safety features, and the Tesla going about 125 miles on the energy equivalent of a gallon of gas. The BMW makes nice noises and offers a manual transmission. In the end I bought the Tesla not because of the fuel it used, but because it simply was a better car at a far lower cost. I do miss a manual transmission, but other than that, I find electric motors to be just better than IC engines. Smoother, better powerband, more torque, and a fatter and more useful "area under the curve". When I feel the need for IC propulsion I fire up the Suzuki. In the end this is less and less about the choice of fuel, and more about the pros and cons of the car.

How about a real world test? Move to the Wyoming badlands, or the Idaho backcountry. Or, just come to where I am, on a cattle ranch about 5,000ft elevation where we run mostly on propane and limited electric due to irregular power supply and super high cost--but we do keep a couple of nice jennies out back for when the storms come. If that laptop-on-wheels can make it up here, I'll let the driver shovel out the stable while posting youtube videos. They won't want to bring a cyber"truck" either, since it can't haul my medium or large trailers. Then, when I make a delivery run, that Tesla can tag along and try to keep up. Zero to 60 in 3 seconds will not help where we are going, so I hope that thing has really good suspension and cheap tires. Believe me, it's gonna take a beating. I hope those battery cells are super-reinforced since they are gonna take a ton of jostling. My 3500 doesn't have any cheap plastic on it, or little chrome strips, or any of that froofroo stuff, for good reason. The thing is, none of us ever tried to mandate that city folk drive large trucks. But city folks think it's okay to mandate EVs for country folk, and it just doesn't work. It's killing the truck markets and the major truck makers. There is not one EV that can work where I work or haul what I haul. Not one. And even city folk are losing money on em. Tires cost, insurance (the first real kicker), sticker price (a shock for anything other than those tiny commuters and newly discounted teslas), no resale value/leasing (the really big kicker), no home repairs, and no longevity due to inferior designs and expensive battery replacements. I am anti-EV out of necessity for my business and my livelihood. I am now also anti-EV for moral principles as well. It's wrong the way this has played out, so folks like me will never convert out of prinicple--even if they could make it work wothout random battery fires burning down parking garages, cargo ships, and even people's homes.

Test drive Mercedes EQS500 last Friday because Mercedes is offering USD42k (RM200K) discount to try sell non moving stocks in Malaysia, then last Wednesday, on labor day, went to local BYD dealer and tested BYD Seal. My test drives conclusion are as follows: On looks BYD Seal have the upper hand. On my arrival at Mercedes local dealer, first look at EQS500, the car looks futuristic but internal it feels cramped, it has a huge LCD panel across the dashboard, it is overkill. EQS500 LCD panel collects dust and visible with naked eyes, and it is awful. The windscreen also reflecting some of the dashboard components, it is very irritating and distracting views during driving. On the other hand BYD Seal 2 LCD panels is nicely positioned and suffice for size car and agrees that the layout is good and is proportional & practical. BYD’s LCD screen ability to change from portrait to landscape is really fascinating. Headroom in BYD Seal is better than EQS, even I had adjusted my seat to the lowest level possible. On the build and finishing, BYD seal beats EQS hand down, during my close inspection of these cars body, EQS poor body joints between the bumper and body gaps are big as compared to BYD seal, EQS does not carries Mercedes premium status anymore, really surprised to see such workmanship on a Mercedes also these are showroom cars. These car performance and handling are closely match. Conclusion BYD Seal is definitely a better car to start with any EV purchase.
